Stress No More! The Buyers Guide to a Fully-Equipped Kitchen. What Are The Essentials? What Do You Need, and Not Need?

Creating a fully-equipped kitchen is central to having a comfortable home. A fully-equipped kitchen is one that has all the necessary equipment and tools to meet the homeowner’s daily cooking and dining needs. Given how many kitchen supplies and equipment there is for sale, however, the idea of creating a fully-equipped kitchen can feel daunting. This buyer’s guide is meant to provide assistance in identifying what products and equipment are essential to a fully-equipped kitchen and suggestions for where to purchase those items.

Tableware
Tableware consists of all the utensils, namely the cutlery, dishware, and glassware, that are used to set a table during a meal. Tableware comes in a limitless number of materials that include glass, bamboo, stainless steel, crystal, silver, and plastic. Typically, the cutlery, dishware, and glassware should match the style of the kitchen as a whole. A more modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and more avant-garde furnishings, for example, could accommodate more modern, eclectic tableware that makes use of unusual materials, shapes, and asymmetrical angles. Another factor to consider when selecting tableware is the composition of the household. Larger households with children may prefer to select tableware made out of more resilient materials, such as plastic glassware and stainless steel cutlery. When determining how much tableware to purchase, it can be helpful to consider the number of household members, how often guests come for meals, and how regularly dishes get washed.

Kitchen Appliances
The core appliances that are necessary in a fully-equipped kitchen are the blender, oven, stove, refrigerator, freezer, and coffee maker. These are the appliances that will be used with the highest frequency in daily cooking and dining. Thus, this is one area in which it is worthwhile to invest in higher quality products. When attempting to assess the quality of a specific product or brand, it can be helpful to read online reviews of the product and compare each brand’s product warranty. Some brands that are known for producing high-quality kitchen appliances include: Ninja, Oster, and KitchenAid for blenders; Kenmore Elite, Samsung, and LG for ovens and stoves; Maytag and Whirlpool for refrigerators and freezers; and Braun and Krups for coffee makers. An important factor to consider when choosing kitchen appliances is a kitchen’s space constraints; measure the open spaces in the kitchen in order to ensure that the larger appliances, such as the refrigerator and stove, will fit into the designated space. Those with more limited kitchen space should also note that side-by-side refrigerator/freezers tend to be the most space-efficient refrigerator style.

Cookware
When it comes to cookware, meaning the pots and pans used for cooking and baking, it is useful to have a wide variety of types in order to accommodate a broader repertoire of recipes. The typical fully-equipped kitchen should have at least one of the following: saute pan, medium and small saucepan, stockpot, and omelet pan. It is also helpful to have at least two different-sized lids. Purchasing a cookware set can provide a good base for a new kitchen. Although cookware comes in a variety of materials, stainless steel will tend to be the most versatile, and it also has the benefit of being dishwasher safe. Before buying cookware, it is important to read through the manufacturer’s guide to ensure that it is compatible with the respective kitchen’s appliances, particularly if the cookware will be washed regularly with a dishwasher.

  1. Personally, I love Vita-mixers. They are amazing!! They aren’t cheap though 🙁 but they’re worth it. You can even make your own soup in them…they are that powerful of a blender.

    1. Vita-mixers are amazing, I’d have to agree! There is a fantastic one at Williams-Sonoma, but you don’t necessarily have to get the most expensive one in order to achieve the results. Keep an eye out for sales.
